5 Bathroom Remodeling Tips for your Forever Home

When it’s time to remodel the bathrooms in your forever home, Specktacular Home Remodeling can help ensure you enjoy your remodel for years to come! Mitch Speck is NARI Universal Design Certified Professional (UDCP) and is skilled in all aspects of universal design and ADA compliant residential remodeling. As we grow older, bathrooms become more dangerous as our risk of slipping and falling increases significantly. Having a safe, comfortable bathroom that is optimized for your needs in all of life’s stages is a must! Here are our top 5 bathroom remodeling tips for your forever home.

1. Low Threshold or Curbless Showers.
As convenient as tub/shower duos are for growing families who need to transition from tub to shower, they have a high threshold you must cross to get in. As we age, that threshold can become a danger to get in and out of daily. We have two options that are must safer for our clients who are wanting to enjoy their home as long as possible.
Option 1: Showers with thresholds that are under 2-inches tall are considered low threshold showers or walk-in showers.
Option 2: Curbless or roll-in showers, which are convenient for members of your family who may be in a wheelchair since they are able to roll straight into the shower.
We can help you decide which shower option is right for you and your family!

2. Shower Seating.
Another great feature of any universal design bathroom is including a built-in shower seat. This provides a safe and convenient place to sit while showering. A built-in shower seat is much easier for anyone in a wheelchair to move from their chair to the shower and is much safer than a portable shower seat that can slip and fall while in use!

3. Handheld Shower Heads.
A must for forever homes! Handheld shower heads make it easier to shower while seated or for those folks that have limited mobility. It also makes cleaning the shower easier too.

4. Grab Bars.
Not all grab bars need to be ugly, eye sores! We make sure to install grab bars that are tasteful and fit the style of your home, so they do not look out of place. We recommend adding them in both the shower and toilet at least. Each bathroom and individual has different needs, and Mitch will be able to help you determine the correct amount for your needs!

5. Easy to Reach Storage Space.
It can be difficult for some clients to reach low or high to retrieve toiletries and other items in your bathroom. We will design easy to reach storage spaces in your bathroom to reduce the need to crouch or bend down to reach things such as shampoo and soap while showering. Easy to reach storage will be more convenient for you, increase your safety, and ensure you have a comfortable and beautiful bathroom for years to come!

We hope these tips help give you ideas on how to remodel your bathroom so you and your family can enjoy it for years to come! Be sure to contact us when you’re ready to start planning your bathroom remodel!
