As we are coming to a close on our summer, we would encourage you to pay special attention to a couple of things around your home before we move into our colder and wetter time of year.
Buzz, Buzz
Have bees, yellow jackets or wasps been congregating en masse at your house? That means they have a home there too. While bees are a great thing to have around if you have lots of flowers and enjoy watching them, if they have built their home in or on your home, they can be very destructive. They can damage your siding, roofing, framing, insulation and drywall. Removing them is the best remedy. If you are comfortable, you can attempt this one on your own. If not, hire a professional.
A Roof Gathers Much Moss
Before our rainy season gets into full swing, check your roof. This year we have cleaned a few roofs and realized that we need to treat the moss on our three year old roof as well. On our trip to the hardware store, Debbie and I asked what they would recommend. We were surprised, but the answer was “liquid treatment.” We both thought it would be granular, but when he told us why, his reasoning made sense. Among his reasons were that the granular tends to blow off the roof in a wind storm and when there is a deluge of rain (I know that is uncommon here in Oregon) it will just run off the roof and into the gutters.
Whether you choose liquid or granular, make sure you follow the directions. Improper application can damage your plants near the roof edges. Once the treatment kills the moss, it should be cleaned off the roof. Remember to clean the gutters afterward while you are up there.
